An unprecedented comeback was provided by Inbee Park at the Rio Olympics. Her Gold Medal win was an out-of-the-blue performance by someone dealing with a painful thumb, who hadn’t made a LPGA event cut since April and who hadn’t broken 70 for a round since March. She sucked it up and showed how well she used to play consistently when she was a former #1 ranked golfer. She won easily by 5 strokes over Lydia Ko (Silver Medal). The Bronze Medal was won by Shanshan Feng for her 3rd place finish.
Maria Verchenova (Russia) also made news. She was a late entry into the Olympics and made the best of it by posting a 62 on Saturday for a new course record. She didn’t realize it was a record round until someone in the scoring area asked if she wanted her scorecard back since it was a record round.
The Wyndham Championship was the last regular season event for the PGA Tour. Si Woo Kim posted his first PGA Tour win with a -21 – 5 strokes better than Luke Donald. Also, Shawn Stefani closed out a 66 on Sunday to squeak into the top 125 and retain his PGA Card for the 2016/17 season.
Thomas Pieters finished 4th at the Rio Olympics and then traveled 6000 miles to play in the D&D Real Czech Masters. His long trip resulted in a 2nd place finish 1 stroke behind Paul Peterson who notched his first European Tour victory.
