The Sunday leaderboard at the PGA Championship was filled with you guns who had never won a Tour event let alone a Major. The pressure that these players were under showed up on the back 9 Sunday as the each found ways of messing up which allowed an experienced 14 Tour winner Justin Thomas to climb into competition after starting the day off 7 strokes behind. Thomas finished at -5 and 1 stroke behind Mito Pereira who held the lead by himself or jointly all day long.
Pereira going into the tough 18th hole had a 1 stroke lead over Thomas and Will Zalatoris. Then the wheels came off for Pereira, He his a very strange tee shot which end up in the creek. After taking a drop, his approach shot came up short of the green. He went on to double bogie the hole and not only lose the lead but fall back to -4 leaving Thomas and Zalatoris to play in the playoff.
Under the PGA Championship rules, the playoff was an aggregate 3 hole playoff using holes 16, 17, and 18. Both had birdies on 16. Then on 17, Thomas hit his drive to the green on the driveable 17th and made his birdie while Zalatoris settled for par. They both had pars on 18 giving Thomas the win for his 2nd PGA Championship.
