Arnie’s tournament looked like it was going to be a runaway victory the way Jason Day played the first two days. Then it looked like he took the foot off the pedal before having to hanker down on the last two holes on Sunday to knock off Kevin Chappelle who tied for the lead after the 16th hole. With the win, Day moves up a slot to #2 in the OWGR.
Sei Young Kim won her 4th victory on the LPGA tour while just being in her sophomore season. She posted a runaway 5 stroke win over Lydia Ko (who shot 64/65 over the weekend). The total of -27 by Kim for the 4 day event ties the LPGA record held by Annika Sorenstam.
Speaking of Annika, last week was the 15th year anniversary of her “59” on the LPGA tour. Only 1 other person has posted a better score of “58” on a professional level tour and that was by Ryo Ishakawa back in 2010 on the Japan Golf Tour. Besides Annika, there have been only 4 others to post a 59 on a par 72 course. They are:
* Al Geiberger in 1977 on the PGA Tour
* Chip Beck in 1991 on the PGA Tour
* Notah Begay III in 1998 on the Nike Tour
* Kevin Sutherland in 2014 on the Champions Tour
Yes, there have been other “59”s but on shorter par courses:
~ Doug Donakey (Nike) 1998
~ Marahito Kyramoto (Japan) 2003
~ Jason Gore (Nationwide) 2005
~ Adrien Mork (Challenge) 2006
~ Paul Goydos (PGA) 2010
~ Stuart Appleby (PGA) 2010
~ Will Wilcox ( Web.com) 2013
~ Russell Knox (Web.com) 2013
~ Jim Furyk (PGA) 2013
