Mo Martin showed that despite loosing the 36 hole lead on Saturday by dropping 3 strokes back (shooting 77), she still could conjur up enough momentum to be the only player in the field’s top 10 to play to even par on Sunday. This was of course made possible by her eagle on the par 5 18th hole to help her win The RICOH Women’s British Open by 1.  That makes it three Americans winning the first three Women’s Majors (Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie being the other two). Can the US surge maintain this success over the foreign players who have been pretty dominant of late?

Staying across the pond, Justin Rose won the Scottish Open for his back to back wins in his last 2 starts (the Quicken Loans National being the other). Can he make it 3 in a row at Royal Liverpool. The betting sources give him major support as he is second favorite (12-1) only to Rory McIlroy (10-1).

John Deere was won by lefty Brian Harman. This was Brian’s first PGA tour win in 88 events. He played near flawless to win over Zack Johnson who is a mainstay on top of the leaderboard at the Deere event (certainly a horse for this course). Harman now gets to use his passport and make his way over to the OPEN Championship.

Colin Montgomerie came close a couple of times but failed to win a PGA tour major. But, like fine wine, he had gotten better with age and has now posted his seond major win this year by besting Gene Sauers in a playoff at the US Seniors Open.

Somewhat golf related, but not on the course, was the announcement over the weekend that Golf Channel’s Holly Sonders (Morning Drive, Golf Academy and Playing Tips from the Pros) has moved on. Contract negotiations apparently fell through and it appears she will be taking her smile and …. over to Fox where she will be working the USGA events next year that Fox has picked up. Also, the word is she will be doing sideline reporting for NFL Games. She’s going to have to get a whole new wardrobe for her new gigs.
