Despite a 5 stroke victory over a strong field at the WGC-Mexico Championship, Dustin Johnson did not have a walk-in-the-park event. He was being pushed by Rory McIlroy to continue to keep the metal to the petal. Johnson was accurate off the tee and putted better than normal to post a -21 (263) in the thin air at Club de Golf Chapultepec. With the victory, he earned over $1.7 million. It is getting to seem that he ups his game when the purse is large. Even McIlroy picked up a check over $1 million for finishing second. This was a no cut event so there were 71 golfers playing all 4 rounds. Finishing last was Shaun Norris and he went away with $48,500. Not bad for finishing 41 strokes behind Johnson.
This was Johnson’s 20th Tour victory and more amazing is that it was his 11th win in his last 55 events. Johnson became only the 5th tour golfer to win 20 events before his 35 birthday. Can you name the other 4? (Answer at the bottom of this posting.)
