Hooray – No rules violations and delays in deciding what to do by the USGA. Did Mike Davis and crew overreact to the criticism voiced by players and alike over the new Chambers Bay course? Despite its 7700 yards plus in length and the high/thick fescue, the Erin Hills course didn’t match up to USGA standards of the past. 31 golfers were under par at the end. Having the players fight to get scores posted around par for this event is much more entertaining. Not taking anything away from Brooks Koepka who attacked the Erin Hills course like he should have with length and accuracy, the back 9 on Sunday was just not very entertaining. Brian Harman played extremely well but didn’t have the distance when it was needed to make a move. Hideki Matsuyama got in the clubhouse early with a -12 after shooting a 66 but he was just too far back in the pack with so many golfers in front of him. Lots of golfers within stricking distance early but the charge wasn’t there.
Congrats to Koepka for playing an outstanding Open and not looking back.
