Australian Cameron Smith put on a show on Sunday at “The Open” at the Old Course at St Andrews.
He started the day 4 strokes behind co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland. Rory took over the sole lead shortly after the start as Hovland. McIlroy seemed in control of the event. However, when Smith hit the back 9, he got hot and ran off 5 straight birdies to jump into contention. Smith went into the 18th with a stroke lead. His playing partner Cameron Young drive the green and one putted for a temporary tie with Smith. Smith ran his putt from off the green to short birdie distance and dropped it in. McIlroy was 2 behind and his second shot at the par 4 was wide and long. McIlroy finished at 18 under, Young finished at 19 under and Smith won with a total of 20.
